Nalbari, June 19: A tragic event unfolded at Nalbari Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) on Friday, where a 28-year-old man lost his life after reportedly falling from the fifth floor. The individual has been identified as Jatindra Kalita, a resident of Balishar in Nalbari district.
Family members revealed that Kalita was admitted to the hospital earlier that morning for medical attention. His cousin mentioned that he had voiced fears that "something had been done to him."
“We brought him to the hospital around 9-10 am. He fell from the fifth floor,” the cousin recounted.
According to NMCH Superintendent Dr. Madhab Rajbangshi, the patient arrived at the facility in a severely distressed mental state, showing signs of paranoia and fear.
“He was admitted around 4:30 am, accompanied by his mother, brother, and driver. The family reported that a few days prior, some friends had taken him to Mangaldoi under the guise of offering him work. Upon his return, he confided in his mother that he had been given something to eat and sprayed with an unknown substance. He expressed fears that someone was attempting to kill him,” Rajbangshi explained.
Medical staff conducted a CT scan in the emergency department, which showed no abnormalities. Due to his erratic behavior and mental state, he was referred to the psychiatry department for further assessment.
“While being transported to the psychiatry unit, the driver accompanied him in the lift, while his mother opted for the stairs. Upon reaching the fifth floor, the driver briefly stepped away to retrieve medical documents, instructing Kalita to wait. It was during this moment that he allegedly jumped from the fifth floor,” the superintendent detailed.
Hospital personnel quickly moved him to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), but he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
“We have completed all necessary legal procedures. A magistrate visited the hospital to finalize the required documentation. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination,” Rajbangshi added.
The superintendent further noted that based on the patient's recent behavior and family accounts, he seemed to be experiencing significant mental distress and persistent fears of harm.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, with the post-mortem report pending.
