Fatal Accident at Milan Bergamo Airport

A devastating event unfolded at Milan Bergamo Airport on Tuesday, resulting in the death of a 35-year-old man who was tragically drawn into the engine of a Volotea Airbus A319, as reported by local authorities and media outlets.

The individual, who was not a passenger or an airport staff member, allegedly breached a security barrier and approached the aircraft stationed on the taxiway. Authorities are investigating the possibility that this incident was a suicide.

According to reports, the man parked his vehicle near the terminal, accessed the arrivals area on the ground floor, and then opened a security gate that led directly to the aircraft parking zone.

The aircraft, which was scheduled to fly to Asturias, was in the process of pushing back from the parking area when the tragedy occurred, as detailed by Italian media.

Volotea confirmed that there were 154 passengers aboard the flight, in addition to six crew members, including two pilots and four cabin crew. The airline stated on social media that they are committed to providing support to the affected passengers and crew, including psychological assistance.

Flight operations were halted from 10:20 a.m. until noon local time. The airport operator, SACBO, issued a statement indicating that operations were suspended due to an aircraft being immobilized on the runway due to technical issues. This led to delays in departing flights, with some arrivals being diverted or canceled.

In total, nine flights were redirected, six were rerouted, and eight departures were canceled. Operations at the airport resumed after noon local time, according to reports.
