Kolkata, August 17: The tragic hotel fire in Tarapith, located in West Bengal's Birbhum district, has resulted in seven fatalities, as confirmed by local authorities. The owner of the establishment, Kalyan Paul, has been taken into custody.
According to Birbhum District Police Superintendent Vidit Raj Bundesh, the death toll has increased, prompting an investigation into the hotel's fire safety measures and the operational status of its firefighting systems.
Witnesses have reported that a rear exit door was locked, preventing guests from escaping, which contradicts Paul's earlier assertion that panic led guests to overlook the exit.
Paul suggested that the chaos caused by the fire led many to attempt an escape through the reception area, resulting in injuries.
Authorities are currently examining these conflicting accounts as part of their investigation.
The fire erupted around 5 a.m. on Monday at the hotel adjacent to the Tarapith Police Station. Preliminary assessments by the fire department indicate that a short circuit may have ignited the blaze. Fortunately, the fire was contained primarily to the first floor and partially to the second floor, which helped limit casualties.
All seven victims were pilgrims who had traveled from various districts to participate in rituals during the holy month of Shravan.
Following the extinguishing of the fire, the injured were evacuated and transported to Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital, where two individuals remain hospitalized. A total of 22 people were rescued by emergency services, with nine found unconscious. Many have since been discharged after receiving initial treatment, while two continue to receive care but are reported to be stable.
Police officials confirmed that the hotel was equipped with a fire suppression system and had two designated staircases. However, the windows of the staircases were closed, which trapped smoke inside and caused many to suffer from smoke inhalation. Paul has been arrested and is currently being interrogated by the police.
