Cairo: The World Health Organization reported that a recent airstrike on a hospital in Sudan's western Darfur region resulted in the deaths of at least 64 individuals, including 13 children. This tragic incident occurred last week.

The attack targeted the Al Daein Teaching Hospital in East Darfur on Friday, injuring at least 89 others and rendering the facility inoperable, according to WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus on social media.

Sudan has been engulfed in turmoil since April 2023, following a violent power struggle between the military and the paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces, which has escalated into widespread conflict across the nation.

The RSF has accused the military of orchestrating the hospital strike.

In contrast, the military has denied responsibility, with two officials claiming the strike aimed at a nearby police station. They requested anonymity due to restrictions on discussing the incident publicly.

The ongoing conflict has reportedly claimed over 40,000 lives, according to United Nations estimates, although humanitarian organizations suggest the actual toll may be significantly higher.

The WHO has documented more than 2,000 fatalities resulting from attacks on healthcare facilities since the conflict began.
