Fatal Mid-Air Collision in Rio


On Sunday, a tragic incident occurred in Rio de Janeiro when two helicopters collided in mid-air, resulting in the deaths of six individuals, including Argentine YouTuber Gaspi. Reports indicate that singer Oliver Tree was also aboard one of the helicopters at the time of the crash. CNN Brazil confirmed that Gaspi, aged 23, was traveling with Tree, who hails from California, when the accident took place.


According to the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro, Tree was one of five passengers on one of the helicopters involved. The other helicopter was piloted by a single individual, who also lost their life in the incident. As of now, Tree's family has not publicly acknowledged his involvement in the crash.


The collision occurred around 09:00 local time, and Brazilian authorities are currently investigating the cause. Firefighters reported that all six individuals on board the helicopters perished. One helicopter crashed in the Recreio district of Rio, exploding upon impact. Emergency services indicated that the aircraft fell in a parking area designated for electric vehicles, igniting a fire that affected approximately 20 cars.


Among the deceased were four passengers from one helicopter, along with its pilot and the pilot of the second helicopter. Further details regarding the victims and the flights have yet to be disclosed. An investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the collision.


Helicopter traffic is a common sight in Rio de Janeiro, where flights frequently traverse coastal routes and Guanabara Bay for various purposes, including private, tourist, and corporate travel. Reports from Brazilian news outlet G1, referenced by the Spanish newspaper El País, reveal that the parking area impacted by one of the helicopters was situated on land leased to the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD for vehicle storage.
