Fatal Hair Transplant Procedure in Kanpur

In a shocking incident, two engineers tragically lost their lives following a hair transplantation procedure at a private clinic in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. What many considered a routine cosmetic treatment turned deadly for the two men, who passed away within a day of their surgery.

The victims, Vineet Dubey, who worked as an assistant engineer at the Panki Power Plant, and Mayank Katiyar from Farrukhabad, visited Dr. Anushka Tiwari's clinic, known as Empire. Following their deaths, Dr. Tiwari has reportedly gone missing, and the clinic has since removed its displays.

Details of the Incident

The grim situation came to light when Jaya Tripathi, Vineet's wife, filed a complaint on the chief minister's portal. In her statement, she described how her husband experienced severe facial swelling and intense pain shortly before his death on March 14, just a day after undergoing the hair transplant.

According to Additional DCP West Vijendra Dwivedi, the investigation suggests that an infection may have arisen during the procedure, which went untreated, leading to a rapid deterioration in Vineet's health and subsequent death.

Legal Action Against the Doctor

Following Jaya's complaint, a First Information Report (FIR) was filed on May 9 under section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita for causing death due to negligence. As of now, police have issued six notices to Dr. Tiwari, but she has not responded to any of them, according to ACP Kalyanpur Abhishek Pandey.

Doctor's Qualifications Under Scrutiny

Medical regulations stipulate that only certified dermatologists or plastic surgeons are authorized to perform hair transplants. However, Dr. Tiwari holds a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from Manav Rachna Dental College in Faridabad, which does not qualify her for such procedures. Reports indicate that she has never presented any certification in hair transplantation.

Experiences of Other Patients

Ramji Sachan, a previous patient of the same clinic who survived his hair transplant, shared that his procedure lasted 5-6 hours and he experienced swelling and pain afterward. He also noted that he had paid upfront, but the prescription he received lacked the doctor's name or medical registration.

Investigation Panel Formed

In response to the incident, Kanpur's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Hari Dutt Negi, has established a three-member committee to investigate the clinic's operations. The panel will assess how the clinic functioned, the number of patients treated, and whether qualified personnel conducted the surgeries.
