Changsha, May 5: A catastrophic explosion at a fireworks manufacturing facility in central China's Hunan Province has resulted in the deaths of 21 individuals and left 61 others injured, as reported by local authorities on Tuesday.
The incident took place around 4:43 p.m. on Monday at the Huasheng fireworks plant located in Liuyang, a city under the jurisdiction of Changsha, the provincial capital.
In response to the disaster, over 480 rescue personnel have been deployed in five teams, along with three rescue robots to assist in the operation.
Due to the explosion's proximity to two black powder storage facilities, rescuers have evacuated residents from the surrounding area and established a safety buffer zone to mitigate the risk of further incidents.
By 8 a.m. on Tuesday, rescuers had confirmed the fatalities following initial search efforts. The injured victims have been transported to hospitals for urgent medical care, and a second search operation is currently in progress.
The Ministry of Emergency Management has sent specialists to the site to oversee the rescue operations.
Authorities have detained the company's management, and an investigation into the cause of the explosion is underway.
Rescue teams evacuated everyone within a 3km (1.9mi) radius of the plant and have taken precautions such as humidifying the area to prevent additional accidents during the rescue efforts.
President Xi Jinping has called for comprehensive efforts to locate any missing individuals and to provide aid to the injured. He has also demanded a thorough investigation into the incident to ensure accountability, according to state media.
Liuyang is recognized as a major hub for fireworks production, often referred to as the world's largest fireworks manufacturer.
Explosions at fireworks facilities are unfortunately common in China and frequently result in fatalities. Earlier this year, a similar incident in Hubei province claimed the lives of 12 people.
