Explosion in Kakinada District


Amaravati: The tragic explosion at a firecracker manufacturing facility in Kakinada district, Andhra Pradesh, has resulted in a rising death toll, now at 21, following the passing of an injured individual at a local hospital on Sunday.


The victim, identified as Darsipathi Lavaraju, aged 40, died early Sunday morning at Kakinada Government General Hospital (GGH).


Currently, eight individuals are receiving treatment at GGH, while another is being cared for at Peddapuram.


The explosion, which occurred on Saturday afternoon in Vetlapalem village, tragically claimed the lives of twenty workers, including nine women, who were burned alive.


P. Narayana, the Minister for Municipal Administration, reported that the condition of the injured remains critical.


Initial investigations revealed that the firecracker unit had exceeded the number of workers allowed by regulations, with some employees lacking adequate training.


Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu visited the explosion site and the injured at GGH on Saturday night, announcing a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for each family of the deceased and promising the best medical care for the injured.


He has mandated a comprehensive investigation into the incident and ordered the suspension of several officials, including the Peddapuram Revenue Divisional Officer and the District Fire Officer, due to negligence.


The Chief Minister emphasized that strict measures would be implemented to prevent future occurrences, including the confiscation of properties belonging to those found responsible.


On Sunday, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan visited the injured at Kakinada GGH, expressing shock at the severity of their burns.


He sought explanations regarding the explosion from the District Collector and the Superintendent of Police, while also comforting the families of the victims.


Pawan Kalyan ensured that the district administration and medical personnel prioritize the health and recovery of the injured.
