Noida, July 15: A devastating fire erupted in a five-storey building located in Mamura village, resulting in the tragic deaths of two individuals.

More than 100 residents were successfully evacuated from the building. Unfortunately, a man and a woman were critically injured and later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Authorities have detained both the building owner and the leaseholder for questioning.

Initial investigations suggest that the fire ignited due to a spark from an electric scooter that was charging. This spark subsequently ignited nearby petrol vehicles, leading to a rapid spread of the flames throughout the structure.

Upon receiving alerts about the fire, police and fire department teams quickly arrived at the scene to initiate rescue operations.

Firefighters were able to control the blaze after rescuing those trapped inside the smoke-filled building.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that many individuals experienced suffocation due to the smoke.

A local resident, Arnab, recounted, "Around 11 AM, an electric scooter was charging in the basement. Suddenly, it appears there was a short circuit, causing the scooter to ignite. The flames then spread to nearby items, and people began to suffocate from the smoke."

"Local residents also joined in the rescue efforts. Some laborers working nearby assisted individuals on the upper floors in descending via the stairs. Over 150 people were evacuated safely, while fire crews continued to battle the flames," he added.

DCP (Central) Shailendra Kumar Singh commented on the incident, stating, "Today, in the Phase 3 police jurisdiction, an electric scooter that was charging in the parking area caught fire, leading to significant smoke that affected the upper floors of the building."

He confirmed that police and fire services acted swiftly upon receiving the fire report.

"A substantial number of police personnel and fire tenders were dispatched immediately to the location," he noted.

Singh reported that over 100 individuals were rescued during the operation.

The thick smoke complicated rescue efforts, but emergency responders managed to evacuate residents in a timely manner.

"More than 100 people were successfully brought to safety. During this process, two individuals fell ill and were transported to the hospital for treatment. We are currently awaiting updates on their condition," Singh stated.

He also mentioned that a case has been filed against the leaseholder and the building operator for alleged negligence, and both have been taken into custody.

Further updates are anticipated.
