On the morning of June 3, 2026, the upscale area of Malviya Nagar in South Delhi experienced a catastrophic incident. A severe fire erupted in a hotel located in the Hauz Rani area, tragically claiming the lives of at least 21 individuals, most of whom were foreign nationals. Firefighters acted swiftly, managing to rescue over 40 people from the smoke-filled building. This heartbreaking event has raised alarming concerns about the safety regulations in commercial buildings and hotels across Delhi.

Hotel's Licensing Issues

Reports indicate that the hotel, named 'Flourish Stay', was only licensed to operate six rooms under the Delhi government's 'Bed and Breakfast' scheme. However, it was allegedly functioning with 25 rooms at the time of the fire. According to the B&B policy, registered establishments are permitted a maximum of eight rooms and 16 beds, leading to serious questions about compliance and potential violations. Initially identified as 'Lemon Green Inn', the Delhi government later clarified that the establishment was indeed 'Flourish Stay' located in the Hauz Rani area.

Investigation and Safety Concerns

When questioned about the incident, local MLA Satish Upadhyay did not confirm the allegations but assured that an investigation would be conducted. The police have also stated that they will investigate the hotel owner. Reports suggest that the establishment lacked a necessary 'No Objection Certificate' (NOC) for fire safety. Delhi's Home Minister has been in constant contact with fire department officials, who informed the government that the building should have obtained the required fire safety approvals, which were not secured.

Fire Incident Details

The fire broke out at 8:48 AM, causing chaos in the busy area near Max Hospital in Saket. Firefighters and rescue teams launched a significant operation to evacuate individuals trapped inside, successfully rescuing over 40 people from the smoke-filled premises. In a desperate attempt to escape the flames and thick smoke, two women were seen jumping from the building. Many injured individuals were promptly transported to Max Hospital and AIIMS Trauma Center.

Government Response

In response to this tragic incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced compensation of ₹2 lakh for the families of the victims and ₹50,000 for those injured. Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating that her government is closely monitoring the situation and ensuring that affected families receive all necessary medical assistance and support. Former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also expressed concern, highlighting the alarming frequency of fire incidents in Delhi and the loss of innocent lives.
