Devastating Blaze in Central Kolkata

Kolkata: A tragic incident unfolded early Wednesday morning when a fire broke out in a five-storey building on Mirza Galib Street, resulting in the deaths of at least nine individuals, including a young child aged four. Six others sustained injuries, as reported by local authorities.

Firefighters responded promptly, deploying five fire engines to combat the flames that ignited around 1:45 AM. Emergency services, including police and personnel from the Disaster Management Department, arrived swiftly to assist with rescue efforts.

A senior official confirmed that approximately 80 individuals were rescued from the building, which housed multiple hotels.

Fire Department Minister Kaushik Chowdhury, who visited the scene, stated that the identities of the deceased are still being verified. Among the victims are both Indian citizens and nationals from Bangladesh.

Chowdhury expressed his shock at the conditions within the building, noting, "The situation inside is dire. There are numerous hotels operating here, and I am appalled by what I have witnessed."

Regarding the fire's origin, the minister suggested a possible short circuit but emphasized that a forensic investigation would clarify the cause.

He also criticized the building management for failing to adhere to essential safety and construction standards, indicating that there were significant irregularities in the hotel's operations.

The injured individuals have been transported to a local hospital for treatment.

A police officer mentioned that the dense smoke hindered firefighters' access to the upper floors, raising concerns that the death toll could rise beyond the current nine.

"Our main focus is on rescuing anyone still trapped and understanding the fire's cause. Although the flames have been extinguished, the building remains extremely hot, and cooling efforts are ongoing," the officer added.

The West Bengal Fire Department's headquarters is situated nearby.

Another police official revealed that the building's owner is currently evading authorities.

"A case is being filed at the New Market police station, and actions are being taken against the owner. Police have initiated raids at the owner's residence to locate him," he stated.

An investigation is underway to ascertain the events leading to the fire and to determine if safety regulations were breached.

According to the Chief Minister's Office, CM Suvendu Adhikari is expected to visit the fire site.
