Fire Incident in Tezu

Itanagar, Dec 17: A devastating fire in Tezu, Arunachal Pradesh, resulted in the tragic deaths of two siblings, aged 8 and 15, on Wednesday.

The victims, 17-year-old Chera Nikia and 9-year-old Chera Kagung, were reportedly home alone in Peon Colony when the fire broke out.

This incident took place around 3:30 AM in the Lohit district headquarters.

According to local authorities, the fire rapidly spread through three residential buildings owned by Habung Umi, Gyati Naka, and Chera Neel, all of which were older structures.

Officials noted that the age of these buildings contributed to the swift spread of the flames, leaving little opportunity for escape.

Emergency services, including the fire brigade and police, arrived at the scene around 4 AM and managed to control the fire, preventing it from affecting adjacent homes.

Lohit Superintendent of Police Thupten Jamba confirmed that a case has been filed at the Tezu police station.

He mentioned that the bodies have been sent for post-mortem to facilitate identification and legal procedures.

At this stage, the cause of the fire remains undetermined, and further investigations are ongoing.

Witnesses reported that the fire may have been triggered by the explosion of at least four LPG cylinders, which caused the flames to spread quickly. Neighbors attempted to extinguish the fire but were unable to rescue the children.

This incident marks the second fire-related tragedy in the town within a month. In early November, a fire at the boys' hostel of Indira Gandhi College destroyed seven rooms, raising alarms about fire safety measures in local facilities.

No injuries were reported in that incident, and investigations are still in progress.
