Tirupati, April 23: A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Tirupati district, Andhra Pradesh, where a family of five tragically lost their lives within hours. A man took the lives of his wife and mother before ending his own life by lying on a railway track. His two children, who attempted to save him, were also killed by the same train.

This shocking event took place in the Venkatakrishna Palem panchayat of Narayanavanam mandal on Wednesday.

According to police reports released on Thursday, a man named Mohan strangled his wife and mother with a cloth in their home located on Chakali Veedhi in Venkatakrishna Palem.

Mohan's wife, Harita (33), operated a tailoring shop and beauty parlour, while his mother, Chandrakala (65), was a homemaker.

After committing the murders, Mohan picked up his son Kaushik (14) and daughter Harini (12) from their school in Puttur, falsely informing their teacher that their grandfather had died.

The grim discovery was made by Harita’s brother, Balakrishna, who visited the house to check on Mohan after he failed to return from running an errand for him. Balakrishna, who assisted Mohan in managing a cement shop, was horrified to find both women dead.

Upon alerting the police, special teams were formed to locate Mohan. They searched various locations in Puttur, Nagari, and surrounding areas.

Investigations revealed that after picking up his children, Mohan drove them around Chittoor and Tirupati before arriving at Vepagunta railway station around 7:15 PM. After parking his motorcycle, he led his children to the railway tracks, where he placed his head on the tracks in a suicide attempt as a train approached.

In a desperate attempt to save him, the children tried to pull him away, but all three were tragically struck by the Egmore-Kacheguda Express traveling at 100 km/h. The train's driver notified the Puttur station master of the incident.

The motives behind Mohan's actions remain unclear. Preliminary police investigations indicated that he did not face any financial difficulties and appeared to be mentally stable. Reports suggest he had even given money to a relative earlier that day to settle a debt with his sister.

The Narayanavanam police have opened a case for investigation, while the railway police have registered a separate case concerning the deaths on the railway tracks.
