Heartbreaking Incident in Amaravati

In a tragic event in Amaravati on March 30, a doctor and his wife took their own lives after administering a lethal substance to their three-year-old daughter, who faced both mental and physical challenges.

K. Gopi, an anaesthetist employed at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhopal, and his wife, Shankara Kumari, a nurse at the same institution, were involved in this heartbreaking incident.

The couple attempted suicide by injecting themselves and their daughter, Mounika, with toxic substances at a lodge in Narsaraopet, located in the Palnadu district of Andhra Pradesh, on Sunday.

While Shankara Kumari and Mounika tragically passed away on the same day, Dr. Gopi succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital in Narsaraopet the following day.

Initial police investigations suggest that the couple's decision was driven by despair over their daughter's condition.

Gopi, originally from Satluru village in Palnadu, and Shankara Kumari, from Dharmavaram in Sri Sathya Sai district, had entered into a love marriage. Their distress grew following the birth of Mounika, who faced significant health challenges.

Twenty days prior, Shankara Kumari had visited her parents with Mounika. Gopi arrived from Bhopal two days before the incident and called his wife and daughter to Narsaraopet on Saturday, where they checked into Dinesh Grand lodge.

On Sunday morning, Gopi sent a message along with photographs to his sister via WhatsApp, indicating their intention to end their lives. This prompted family members to rush to the lodge, where they found the trio unconscious. They were taken to a hospital, but unfortunately, Shankara Kumari and Mounika could not be saved.

Dr. Gopi, in critical condition, passed away early on Monday.

Authorities recovered sedatives, syringes, and other related items from the lodge. The bodies of the family were released to their relatives after a postmortem examination on Monday.

The Narsaraopet police have registered a case and are continuing their investigation.
