Mumbai Police Foil Alleged Attack During Muharram Procession
On Saturday, Mumbai police announced that they successfully thwarted a potential tragedy aimed at participants of a Muharram procession in the city. According to police reports, a suspect was arrested for allegedly planning to distribute capsules containing zinc phosphide, a highly toxic substance, among the attendees of the religious procession. Officials stated that if this plan had been executed, it could have endangered the lives of thousands.
Seizure of Nearly 15,000 Capsules
Speaking to the media, DCP Jayant Meena from the Central Region, Zone 1, revealed that police received a tip-off about an individual distributing a substance resembling medication during the Muharram procession, leading to the suspect's detention. Authorities recovered documents such as an Aadhaar card and passport from the suspect, along with approximately 14,900 capsules believed to contain zinc phosphide. Investigators confirmed that the capsules had not yet been distributed, allowing police to prevent the alleged plot from being carried out. Reports indicate that a man named Salman Syed fell ill after consuming one of the capsules, prompting further investigation into the matter.
Suspect Identified as Pune Resident
The suspect has been identified as Fayyaz Premji, a resident of Viman Nagar in Pune. Police disclosed that he holds a BBA degree and is involved in the paint business.
