Chennai: A tragic explosion at a licensed fireworks factory in Namaskarithanpatti, located in Tamil Nadu's Virudhunagar district, resulted in the deaths of two workers on Thursday, according to officials.

The incident occurred while the employees were engaged in production activities, leading to a significant fire that quickly engulfed parts of the facility, releasing thick smoke and causing widespread panic.

The two victims sustained severe injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene, though their names have not yet been disclosed.

At this time, there are no reports of additional casualties.

Fire and Rescue Services were promptly dispatched to the site to manage the fire, with firefighters working diligently to extinguish the flames and cool the affected areas, particularly due to the presence of explosive materials.

Authorities, including police and revenue officials, arrived to secure the perimeter and keep residents and bystanders at a safe distance from the factory. An investigation has been initiated to uncover the factors that led to the explosion.

Virudhunagar has a history of deadly accidents, including a blast in February 2024 that killed ten workers and another incident in May of the same year that also claimed ten lives. In June 2024, four workers died in a separate explosion near Sattur.

One of the most devastating disasters in the region took place in September 2012, when a fireworks factory explosion resulted in 40 fatalities and over 70 injuries. These repeated incidents have led to calls from labor groups and safety advocates for more stringent inspections, better regulation of chemical handling, and tougher penalties for unauthorized production.
