However, during his walk back home, he found himself alone on Belmont Road in Southampton. At approximately 11:30 pm, he encountered 23-year-old Vickrum Digwa, a meeting later described by the presiding judge as coincidental.

On that fateful night, Nowak had consumed alcohol, but his blood alcohol level was below the legal limit for driving. He was not armed, while Digwa possessed two knives: a sheath knife and a larger dagger associated with his affiliation to the Nihang Sikh order. Noticing the larger weapon, Nowak attempted to film Digwa with his phone, asking if he was a 'bad man.' Digwa then seized the phone from Nowak, and in a shocking turn of events, he stabbed Nowak four times, with one wound to the chest proving fatal.
