Tragic Dynamite Explosion Claims Lives in Meghalaya's Illegal Coal Mine
Fatal Incident at Illegal Coal Mine
Shillong, Feb 5: A devastating dynamite explosion at an unauthorized coal mining site in the Mynsyngat–Thangsko region of Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district resulted in the deaths of four individuals, with another person sustaining serious injuries on Thursday.
According to East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar, "Four bodies have been recovered from the remote mining area. One individual suffering from burn injuries has been transported to Shillong for medical care."
Emergency responders, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Fire and Emergency Services, were dispatched to the scene to aid in rescue and recovery efforts.
Authorities indicated that the casualty count might increase, as reports from the site suggested that more miners could be trapped following a partial collapse of the hill where the illegal mining was taking place due to the explosion.
While the identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed, there are unverified reports suggesting that some victims may be from Assam.
This incident occurs amidst ongoing concerns regarding illegal coal mining activities in the region. Notably, the same Thangsko area experienced a similar dynamite explosion on December 23, 2025, which resulted in the deaths of two miners.
In that earlier incident, district police initially dismissed claims of an explosion as unfounded. However, following media coverage, the Justice (retd) B.P. Katakey committee, established by the Meghalaya High Court to investigate illegal coal mining and transportation, requested a report from law enforcement.
The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) also took notice and demanded a comprehensive report from the state government.
With the latest explosion, the death toll associated with illegal coal mining incidents in East Jaintia Hills has reached seven in recent weeks.
Previously, on January 14, a worker from Assam named Mosaid Ali (48), residing in Jamuna Moudanga of Assam’s Hojai district, lost his life in an accident at an illegal coal mine in Umthe village.
This incident was confirmed by police and has also come under the scrutiny of the Justice Katakey committee.
The recurrence of such incidents has intensified scrutiny on the ongoing illegal coal mining operations in Meghalaya, despite existing judicial oversight and directives aimed at halting these practices.
