Jorhat, Aug 30: A tragic incident unfolded when three teenage boys drowned while celebrating a birthday near a stream on the outskirts of Jorhat.

The victims have been identified as Aksad Kumar Ray, Rehan Ahmed, and Sushanta Patel, all hailing from the Fancy Ali locality in Jorhat. Ray and Ahmed were in Class 10, while Patel was a Class 11 student at a prominent private school in the area.

Reports indicate that a group of approximately 12 students gathered at Kurkani No. 12 Line of Tokola Jaan on Saturday to celebrate a friend's birthday.

During the celebration, seven members of the group entered the Tocklai-Kurkani stream for a swim, leading to the drowning of three individuals.

An official from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) stated that they were alerted about the drowning incident in the Cinnamara-Kurkani Basti area and quickly dispatched a team to the location.

“Upon arrival, we found that one of the three had already been retrieved, while the other two were recovered during our operation,” the official reported.

The bodies were later sent for a medical examination.

“Local sources mentioned that the trio had come to celebrate a birthday and entered the water for bathing. This incident is particularly unfortunate as it occurred in a secluded area,” the official added.

A nearby resident recounted how villagers rushed to the scene after hearing about the incident and attempted to search for the students in the water.

“We managed to pull one of them out, but the other two were unreachable due to the depth of the water,” he explained.

The first student retrieved was still alive initially, but despite efforts from friends to expel water from his lungs, he eventually became unresponsive. He was transported to the hospital as soon as an ambulance arrived.

This tragic event has left the community in mourning and raised concerns among parents regarding the safety of young individuals visiting remote and potentially hazardous water bodies.
