Disturbing Incident in Khallikote

Khalikote/Berhampur: A woman from Kanheipur, located within the Khallikote police jurisdiction in Ganjam district, suffered severe burns after being allegedly set on fire by her in-laws due to dowry disputes early Monday morning.

The victim, identified as Arati Das, has sustained burns covering more than 25% of her body and is currently receiving treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, where her condition is reported to be critical. Her father has filed a complaint at the Khallikote police station, claiming that her in-laws attempted to murder her over dowry issues. Arati had been married to Akash Parida from the same village for two years, following a relationship, and they have a daughter together. Akash is employed in Dubai, but Arati reportedly faced ongoing harassment from her in-laws regarding dowry.

According to sources, a heated argument erupted between Arati and her mother-in-law on Sunday night. The following morning, she was allegedly doused with petrol and set ablaze. Neighbors, alerted by her screams, rushed to her aid and transported her to the hospital. Police have since visited the medical facility and initiated an investigation at the scene of the incident. However, no arrests have been made as the in-laws reportedly fled the premises upon the police's arrival.
