Tamulpur, Nov 1: After four months of searching, the skeletal remains of a 21-year-old woman from Assam, who had been missing while working in Karnataka, have been discovered on a hill near Bengaluru. Authorities suspect foul play related to a romantic dispute.

The victim, Sumi Das, hailed from Harinachora village in Tamulpur district and had relocated to Karnataka for job opportunities to assist her family.

Her disappearance prompted her family to file a missing person report at the Kumarikata police station.

During the investigation, police apprehended Bishal Das, a man from Hailakandi district, who was also employed in Karnataka.

Following the suspect's confession, police took him to Bannerghatta, where Sumi's remains were located.

A murder case has been filed against the accused under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The remains have been transported back to Tamulpur, and arrangements for their return to the family are in progress.

Sumi was the main financial supporter of her family, having sought work outside Assam to aid her father.

The news of her death has devastated her family, and the local community in Harinachora is calling for severe punishment for the perpetrator.

“We were in contact with her until four months ago. Shortly after, we learned that a man named Bishal Das was with her. We repeatedly asked him to help us reach Sumi, but he refused. Eventually, our father went to the police, and we discovered that Bishal had killed her,” her sister recounted.

Concerned about the safety of women migrating for work, she stated, “As a woman, I feel increasingly unsafe working outside the state. I demand the harshest punishment for Sumi's murderer.”

Sumi's father explained that financial hardships had driven her to seek employment beyond Assam.

“My daughter left Assam due to our financial struggles. She was employed at a company. When we lost contact, we sought police assistance. It was only recently that we learned of her tragic fate,” he shared.

Her brother claimed that the accused had threatened the family against involving the police.

“Bishal Das from Hailakandi called me, claiming Sumi was with him. He warned us not to contact the police, threatening that they would both take their lives if we did. Despite this, we reached out to the police and later found out about her murder. We were informed that she had been thrown from a cliff,” he said.

The family and local residents are demanding justice as the investigation continues.
