Mysterious Deaths in Cherelia

All three family members fell seriously ill after allegedly consuming alcohol on Thursday afternoon.

Biswanath Chariali, Nov 6: In a tragic incident, three family members lost their lives under unclear circumstances in Cherelia, located within the Behali revenue circle. Local residents suspect that the consumption of tainted liquor may have led to their deaths.

The victims have been identified as Magho Birja, Luthora Birja, and Urmila Birja. Luthora and Urmila were a married couple, while Magho was Luthora's elder sibling.

Reports indicate that all three individuals became gravely ill after allegedly drinking alcohol on Thursday afternoon. Luthora Birja reportedly passed away at home, while the other two were taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Urmila was admitted to Catholic Hospital, and Magho was transported to Tezpur, where both ultimately succumbed to their conditions.

A neighbor recounted that the family was discovered in distress the following morning, with one already deceased and the other two exhibiting symptoms such as vomiting and convulsions.

According to the neighbor, "We live nearby and are unsure of what transpired inside their home. They did consume alcohol, but we cannot determine if they had an excessive amount that day or what went wrong. In the morning, one family member was found dead, while the others were vomiting and convulsing."

The neighbor added that the two surviving family members were rushed to hospitals, but their health continued to decline.

"The woman died at the hospital, and the man's condition worsened. He was referred to Tezpur Medical College and Hospital, and then to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital as his situation deteriorated further. However, the family lacked the resources to transport him to Guwahati. We suspect that the alcohol may have been contaminated," the neighbor stated.

While the community suspects that contaminated liquor may be the cause of these tragic deaths, the definitive reason remains to be determined.
