Tragic Death of Wild Elephant Due to Electric Fence in Jharkhand

Latehar (Jharkhand), Sep 7: A wild elephant tragically lost its life in Jharkhand's Latehar district after it came into contact with a live electric fence set up by a local resident to deter elephants from invading his property, as reported by officials on Monday.

The incident took place during the night between Sunday and Monday in Kusi Tola, located in Komar village under the jurisdiction of Jhabar Panchayat within the Balumath police station area.

Local sources indicate that a group of approximately 15 elephants had entered the vicinity and were heading towards maize fields when one of them accidentally touched the electrified wire, resulting in its immediate death.

Residents noted that the herd had been present in the area for several days, causing damage to crops and properties.

To protect his land, a villager named Bifa Oraon had installed a fence around his home using exposed electric wires. When the elephants approached the fields late at night, one of them inadvertently came into contact with the live wire, leading to its fatal electrocution.

The death of the elephant caused alarm among the local community, as the distressed herd trumpeted loudly in response. Forest officials are concerned that other elephants in the group may have also experienced electric shocks and injuries.

Upon receiving reports of the incident, teams from the Forest Department and Balumath Police arrived at the scene. The elephant's carcass has been secured, and a postmortem is currently being conducted.

Forest Ranger Nand Kumar Mehta stated that an investigation is underway to ascertain how the electricity was supplied to the fence and to identify those responsible. Legal actions will follow based on the investigation's outcomes.

Officials have advised villagers against using hazardous methods like electrified fences to protect their crops and homes from wild elephants.

This incident is not isolated; it reflects ongoing human-elephant conflicts in the Balumath area. In October 2025, a young elephant's carcass was discovered in a nearby paddy field, and in July 2022, another elephant was found dead in the Ranchi forest, missing its tusks.
