Agartala, July 20: The Director General of Police (DGP) for Tripura, Anurag Dhankar, was found dead under suspicious circumstances on Monday after being discovered unconscious in the bathroom of his office at the Police Headquarters.

After being found, Dhankar was quickly taken to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala, where medical staff were unable to revive him despite extensive resuscitation attempts.

Dr. Pradip Bhowmik, a senior physician at the hospital, confirmed the DGP's death, stating that he arrived at the emergency department in an unresponsive state.

“Upon arrival, there was no detectable pulse or blood pressure. We immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation and continued for approximately 48 minutes. Unfortunately, despite our efforts, he was pronounced dead at 12:48 PM,” Dr. Bhowmik explained.

The precise cause of death will be determined following a post-mortem examination. “It resembled a brought-dead case. The body has been sent for autopsy, and we will know the cause of death after the examination,” he added.

As rumors circulated regarding the circumstances of Dhankar's death, including unverified social media claims of suicide, there has been no official statement from either the Tripura Police or the state government to confirm these reports.

The body has been moved to the hospital mortuary, and family members, including his son, are expected to arrive in Agartala soon.

High-ranking state officials, including Chief Secretary JK Sinha, Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, and West Tripura District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar, arrived at the hospital shortly after the incident. Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha also visited to assess the situation.

Following the news of the DGP's death, Leader of Opposition Jitendra Choudhury and former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar also visited the hospital.

As speculation intensified, Choudhury called for a judicial inquiry overseen by a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court.

“He was one of the most dedicated and honest officers in the Tripura Police. This incident is extraordinary. If it is confirmed as a suicide, the factors leading to such a drastic decision must be thoroughly investigated. We demand a judicial probe under a sitting High Court judge,” stated the CPI(M) leader.

At the time of his passing, Dhankar was a senior IPS officer serving as the head of the Tripura Police. The exact details surrounding his death remain unclear as of this report.
