Outrage in Tripura Over Student's Death

A somber atmosphere enveloped Tripura as the body of a young tribal student, brutally attacked in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, was returned to the state. The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, condemned the racially motivated murder of the Tripura student, asserting that the government is taking the matter very seriously. He assured that one of the suspects, currently on the run, will be apprehended soon.

The victim, 24-year-old Angel Chakma, an MBA final year student from Nandnagar in Unakoti district, succumbed to stab wounds inflicted during a racially charged altercation. On December 9, Angel and his younger brother Michael were confronted by a group of individuals who allegedly made racial remarks, leading to a brawl in a local market.

Police Action and Arrests

In response to the murder, Uttarakhand police dispatched a team to Nepal to capture the sixth suspect involved in the case. Angel Chakma was studying at a private university in Dehradun alongside his brother Michael. While five of the six suspects have been arrested, Yagyaraj Awasthi from Kanchanpur district in Nepal remains at large. The police have announced a reward of ₹25,000 for information leading to his capture.

As public anger escalates over Angel's death, Chief Minister Dhami has promised stringent action against the perpetrators. In a statement released on Saturday, he emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring the safety of all citizens residing in Uttarakhand.

Demands for Justice

Tarun Chakma, Angel's father and a Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, has accused the police of delaying the filing of the First Information Report (FIR). He is demanding swift justice for his son's murder, claiming that the attackers referred to Angel as 'Chinese momo,' despite his insistence that he is Indian.

The police, however, have refuted these claims, stating that they have registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) related to physical harm and threats. Following Angel's death, charges of murder and joint liability have also been added.

Government's Commitment to Justice

Dr. V. Murugesan, ADGP (Law and Order), stated that strict measures have been ordered against all offenders who disrupt law and order and engage in criminal activities. He noted that the altercation appeared to have escalated from a dispute at a restaurant, resulting in the victim's unfortunate death due to injuries sustained during the incident. He has also communicated with senior police officials in Tripura to ensure all necessary actions are taken.

Meanwhile, Tripura's Chief Minister Manik Saha has spoken with Dhami, who assured timely action. Saha mentioned that he has reached out to the victim's family and plans to meet them soon, promising all possible assistance. He confirmed that five individuals have been arrested, with one or two still at large, but they will be apprehended shortly.
