Incident at Gorakhpur Health Center

A tragic incident unfolded at the Chauri Chaura Community Health Center in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday, where a 28-year-old woman died shortly after giving birth. Following her death, the family accused the hospital administration of medical negligence, leading to a significant protest outside the facility where they placed her body as a form of demonstration. This incident has also ignited political tensions in the state.

According to police reports, the family alleged medical malpractice, prompting their protest. The deceased has been identified as Neelam Nishad from Belwa Dubouli village in Deoria district.

Details of the Incident

The police stated that Neelam was admitted to the health center on Saturday due to labor pains and successfully delivered her first child. However, her husband, Dev Nishad, and brother, Ritesh, claimed that her condition deteriorated post-surgery. They alleged that no doctors were present at the hospital during the night, and the lack of timely medical attention led to her death.

Protests and Political Reactions

In response to the incident, the grieving family initiated a protest around 5 AM on Sunday, placing Neelam's body outside the health center and demanding action against the medical staff. The demonstration lasted for approximately six hours, drawing the attention of local police and senior officials, including the area’s police chief. Sarwan Nishad, the local MLA, visited the hospital, conversing with the superintendent and urging the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to conduct an investigation.

After officials assured a fair inquiry, the protest concluded around 11 AM, and the body was sent for post-mortem. Superintendent Sarvjeet Prasad stated that the operation was successful and claimed that Neelam's death was due to a heart attack, denying any allegations of medical negligence.

Political Leaders Weigh In

Akhilesh Yadav, the national president of the Samajwadi Party and former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, expressed his views on the matter via social media, calling for accountability regarding the pregnant woman's death at the Gorakhpur hospital. He criticized Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, suggesting that if there were an effective health minister in the state, he should focus on his department instead of engaging in podcasts.
