A 28-year-old lineman tragically lost his life due to an electric shock while attempting to repair damaged power lines in Palampur on Monday. This incident has sparked significant protests from local residents, family members, and electricity board workers, who are accusing the department of negligence.
The victim, identified as Mohan Lal, also known as Monu, was a resident of Ranital and worked at the Electricity Sub-Division Bindravan. The accident occurred in Ward No. 7 of Bindravan during restoration efforts following storm damage from the previous night.
Reports indicate that strong winds had caused several power lines to snap. On Monday morning, Mohan Lal climbed an electricity pole in a forested area near Bindravan to fix the damaged wires, while five to six colleagues assisted him from the ground by managing the cables.
Sources claim that the power supply had been turned off prior to the repair work. However, during the process, it was allegedly restored unexpectedly by another employee, resulting in the fatal incident.
Those working below the pole reportedly felt an electric current and quickly released the wires, but Mohan Lal, who was still on the pole, had no time to react. He suffered a severe electric shock and tragically died on the pole.
The incident incited anger among locals, relatives, and electricity board employees, who gathered at the scene to protest. They accused the department of gross negligence in the repair process and demanded accountability for the incident.
Protesters insisted that the body not be removed from the pole until authorities committed to a thorough investigation and justice for the deceased. The atmosphere remained charged for hours as family members and employees chanted slogans, emphasizing that such tragedies could befall any worker if safety protocols are disregarded.
This incident has raised serious concerns about safety practices and coordination during electricity repair tasks, especially in emergency situations following storms.
Mohan Lal had recently married and was living with his wife in a rented home nearby.
Authorities, including police, fire brigade personnel, and senior electricity department officials, arrived at the scene after being notified of the incident. An investigation is currently underway.
Despite numerous attempts, no senior officials from the electricity department were available for comment regarding the alleged safety lapse at the time of this report.
