Mirzapur: In a shocking incident, a 45-year-old lawyer was fatally shot in broad daylight in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, on Saturday. The attackers faced a brief struggle as their motorcycle failed to start, according to police reports.

The shooting caused widespread panic among local residents, while the assailants were seen frantically trying to get their bike running before they could escape.

The victim, identified as senior advocate Rajiv Singh, was taking his morning walk when two men on a motorcycle approached him. CCTV footage captured one of the attackers dismounting and firing a crude pistol at Singh, killing him instantly.

Following the shooting, the assailant hurried back to the motorcycle, where his accomplice struggled to start the vehicle by kicking its pedal. During this time, some locals cautiously approached the scene but quickly retreated when the armed attacker aimed his weapon at them.

After several attempts, the motorcycle finally roared to life, allowing the two men to flee the scene. The incident attracted a large crowd, with hundreds gathering at the location.

Authorities revealed that Singh had previously expressed concerns about threats to his life. The former village head, who also practiced law, had reportedly survived two prior attacks.

Superintendent of Police, Aparna Rajat Kaushik, informed reporters, "This morning, we received information at the Kotwali police station regarding Rajiv Singh, alias Rinku Singh, who had suffered a gunshot wound and succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital."

"Upon receiving this report, our teams promptly arrived at the scene, collected physical evidence, and initiated efforts to identify the perpetrator. We have obtained credible leads and are actively pursuing the investigation," she stated.

Kaushik further mentioned that a case has been registered against the accused based on a written complaint from the victim's family.

"Through the complaint, we have identified the accused. Technical surveillance has successfully pinpointed the individual, who is from the same village as the victim," she added.

"Initial indications suggest that the conflict may have arisen from local disputes. However, we are exploring all possibilities and conducting a thorough investigation to ensure the strictest legal action against the perpetrator," she concluded.

Officials confirmed that efforts are ongoing to gather all pertinent evidence, and a specialized police team has been established to locate and apprehend the accused named in the complaint.
