Tragic Cruise Accident at Bargi Dam Raises Questions of Negligence
Bargi Dam Incident: A Case of Criminal Negligence
The recent cruise accident at Bargi Dam in Jabalpur has escalated from a natural disaster to a serious issue of administrative and operator negligence. As investigations progress, alarming revelations have come to light. Notably, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning about strong winds just 24 hours prior to the incident, which was completely ignored. On Friday, rescue teams recovered three more bodies from the reservoir, raising the death toll to nine.
Details of the Incident
This unfortunate event occurred during a sudden storm when the boat capsized. The dam is situated on the Narmada River in Jabalpur district. Reports indicate that at the time of the accident, the ill-fated vessel was carrying between 29 to 34 tourists along with two crew members.
Survivors Reveal Shocking Negligence
Sangeeta Kori, a tourist from Delhi, recounted the harrowing experience, stating that the sudden strong winds caused water to flood the boat, leading to chaos. She mentioned that life jackets were only distributed when water began to enter the vessel, resulting in a scramble among passengers to grab them.
She added, "No one was provided with life jackets beforehand. When water started coming in, they hastily began handing them out, causing panic as people tried to snatch them. Then the cruise capsized. There was a significant lack of caution."
Pilot Ignored Warnings
Kori further explained that the boat's pilot ignored the warnings from local villagers who were urging him to steer the cruise to safety. Instead, he continued on the same path, which ultimately led to the boat capsizing. Her brother had to break open a storage room door to quickly throw life jackets to the passengers.
Weather Advisory Ignored
The weather department had issued an advisory a day earlier, warning of winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kilometers per hour in Jabalpur. Despite this, the cruise was allowed to set sail around 4:30 PM on Thursday, raising serious questions about the decision-making process that led to this tragedy.
Ongoing Rescue Operations Amid Grief
So far, approximately 22 individuals have been rescued, while more than nine remain unaccounted for. The cruise is submerged about 20 meters underwater, and the incident occurred roughly 300 meters from the shore. Local authorities, including the Jabalpur Collector and police superintendent, along with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and other rescue teams, are on-site. As officials recover bodies from the water, grieving families are left in despair.
One survivor shared, "My son and wife are missing. I was injured when the cruise collided with a wave and the glass broke. The staff did not provide us with life jackets; we had to arrange them ourselves and share them. Despite clear warnings of bad weather, questions are now being raised about why the cruise was allowed to operate and whether safety protocols were properly followed."
