Tragic Crash of Indian Air Force Sukhoi Su-30MKI Fighter Jet Claims Lives of Two Pilots
Devastating Incident in Assam
New Delhi/Jorhat: A tragic incident involving a powerful Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet of the Indian Air Force (IAF) has left the nation in shock. The accident occurred on Thursday evening (March 5, 2026) in the Karbi Anglong district of Assam, resulting in the deaths of both pilots on board. The IAF officially confirmed the incident on Saturday.
According to the Air Force, the Su-30MKI was on a routine training mission when it took off from Jorhat Airbase. Shortly after takeoff, around 7:42 PM, the aircraft lost radar contact. It crashed in a remote hilly area of Karbi Anglong, approximately 60 kilometers from Jorhat, near Chokihola or the Inglong Acopy Hill region. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud explosion and seeing flames, prompting local residents and security forces to rush to the scene.
In a statement, the IAF said, “The Su-30MKI was on a training mission when it crashed in the Karbi Anglong area. Unfortunately, Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Durgakar sustained fatal injuries and lost their lives. The entire Air Force stands with the families of these brave officers and offers them comfort during this difficult time.”
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed his condolences on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “I am deeply saddened by the demise of Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Durgakar. Their bravery and service to the nation will always be remembered with pride. My heartfelt sympathies to the grieving families. The nation stands with them in this sorrow.”
Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Durgakar, aged 28, had recently participated in Operation Sindoor and joined the Air Force just four years ago. His father shared with the media that his son was deeply dedicated to the country and took pride in wearing the uniform. The family remains in shock.
A Court of Inquiry has been established to investigate the causes of the accident. The Air Force promptly initiated a search and rescue operation, collaborating with local authorities and security forces. Debris was found scattered at the crash site, but there were no reports of additional damage or civilian casualties.
The Su-30MKI is the primary combat aircraft of the Indian Air Force, with over 260 units in service. Based on a Russian design, it is manufactured in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. This multi-role fighter jet is capable of long-range flights and conducting air-to-air and air-to-ground attacks.
