Bhopal, August 18: A devastating accident in Madhya Pradesh's Bhind district resulted in the deaths of eight labourers and left 23 others injured when a speeding pickup truck collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle, according to police reports on Tuesday.

The incident occurred around midnight near Chhimka village in the Gohad area along National Highway-719. The labourers were returning to their homes in Uttar Pradesh after completing paddy transplantation work in the Gwalior region.

As per police information, there were 29 labourers in the pickup at the time of the crash. Local residents assisted in rescuing the injured, who were then transported to nearby hospitals. Ramnaresh Yadav, the in-charge of Gohad Chauraha police station, noted that the pickup was traveling at a speed estimated between 80-90 km/h.

Yadav explained that the driver attempted to avoid a group of cows that unexpectedly appeared on the highway, causing the vehicle to swerve and collide with the truck.

The impact of the crash was so severe that the pickup was extensively damaged, trapping several individuals inside. Emergency responders and local residents worked together to free the injured.

Authorities reported that five bodies were located at Gohad and three at Gwalior, with identification efforts for the deceased currently underway. The labourers had traveled from various villages to participate in the paddy transplantation.

After finishing their work, they were on their way back to their homes in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh. Yadav indicated that the presence of cattle on the highway was a significant factor in the accident, especially given the high speed of the pickup during nighttime.

Following the incident, the damaged vehicles were cleared from the highway, and traffic was restored after a brief disruption.

Police have initiated an investigation into the accident and are awaiting further details, including the identities of those who lost their lives.
