Tragic Collapse in South Delhi Claims Six Lives, Heroic Act of a Local Woman Remembered
Tragedy Strikes as Building Collapses
On Saturday night, a five-story building near Saket Metro Station in South Delhi collapsed, resulting in the heartbreaking deaths of six individuals. This incident has left numerous families in mourning, but one name stands out, evoking sorrow among the student community: Parvati Ojha. Instead of fleeing, she was busy saving the lives of students present at the scene.
Parvati Ojha: A Mother Figure
Originally from Nepal, Parvati had been residing in Delhi for the past two decades. She operated a small canteen right next to the collapsed structure. For countless young individuals who came to Delhi in search of education or employment, she was more than just a canteen owner; she was a maternal figure, providing not only affordable meals but also emotional support during their ups and downs.
A Final Act of Kindness
Her daughter, Neelam, tearfully recounted that even in her last moments, Parvati was doing what she had always done—caring for others. Witnesses and family members reported that when the building suddenly crumbled, chaos erupted around them. Amidst the panic, Parvati focused on helping students escape safely from the canteen.
Delay in Rescue Efforts
Despite her selfless actions, Parvati could not escape the debris that night. Her family claims that had the rescue teams reached her sooner, she might have survived. They allege that there was a delay in the operation to rescue those trapped under the rubble.
Building Owner Arrested
On Monday, the Delhi police apprehended the building's owner, identified as 71-year-old Karamveer. The structure housed a coaching center, café, and offices, and it was reported that construction work was ongoing on the top floor at the time of the collapse. An FIR has been filed under various sections, including culpable homicide, as investigators look into potential negligence that may have contributed to this disaster. This incident has sparked a broader investigation into illegal constructions in South Delhi, with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) identifying several nearby buildings suspected of violating building regulations.
