In a shocking case from Kanpur, Rubia Khan, a doctor, endured severe dowry abuse from her in-laws, leading to the tragic loss of her unborn children. After her marriage, she faced relentless harassment and demands for additional dowry. This story sheds light on the dark realities of dowry-related violence and the urgent need for justice.

Dowry Demands and Abuse in Kanpur

In Kanpur, the marriage of Rubia Khan was arranged through a matrimonial site. Her father provided a substantial dowry, including a Desire car, ₹1.5 million in cash, and a significant amount of gold and silver jewelry. However, after the wedding, her in-laws began to harass her for additional dowry, demanding ₹1 million more.

A Disturbing Example of Domestic Violence

This horrifying incident highlights how the sacred bond of marriage can be tarnished by dowry demands. Rubia Khan, a doctor and daughter of a retired army major, faced unimaginable cruelty from her in-laws in Chakeri. They subjected her to both physical and mental torture, even leading to the tragic deaths of her unborn children. Following initial negligence from the police, the intervention of the police commissioner resulted in the registration of a case under 13 serious charges.

The Marriage and Subsequent Abuse

Rubia's marriage to Mohammad Tajdar Alam from Sambhal took place on March 23, 2022, through a matrimonial site. Her father invested nearly ₹5 million, including the car and cash, but her in-laws seized all her belongings immediately after the wedding and began demanding more money. The abuse started on the wedding night when her husband revealed he was in love with another woman.

Tragic Loss of Two Unborn Children

Rubia became pregnant shortly after her marriage, but instead of celebrating, her in-laws forced her to eat spoiled food, leading to the death of her first child in January 2023. When she became pregnant again in September 2024, the same cruel treatment resulted in the loss of her second child, and she nearly lost her life due to poisoning.

Continued Harassment and Threats

The torment did not stop there; Rubia's brother-in-law began making inappropriate advances towards her. When she reported this to her husband and in-laws, they threatened her instead. On one occasion, when her brother-in-law attempted to assault her, her husband held her down and threatened her with a knife.

A Shocking Revelation

In April 2025, Rubia returned to her parental home in Kanpur to escape the abuse and gave birth to a healthy girl named Aisha on January 1, 2026. However, she later discovered that her husband had married his former girlfriend. When she confronted him, he callously stated that he married again because she could not bear children.

Political Influence and Police Negligence

The political connections of Rubia's in-laws were evident, as her mother-in-law was a former district panchayat member, and the family had ties to a local MP. This influence led to the initial dismissal of the case by the Chakeri police.

Legal Action Taken

After the police commissioner's involvement, a case was filed against Rubia's husband, in-laws, and his second wife under 13 serious charges. Despite the gravity of the situation, the accused attempted to downplay the matter, claiming their religion allowed multiple marriages without divorce. The police, however, have stated that they are thoroughly investigating the case.
