Dubai/New Delhi, May 9: A tragic incident occurred near the Strait of Hormuz when a wooden dhow, carrying a crew of 18 Indian nationals, capsized after a fire broke out onboard. This unfortunate event resulted in the death of one seafarer and left four others with burn injuries, as confirmed by official sources on Saturday.

Details of the Incident

The incident unfolded on Friday in the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz, an area currently experiencing heightened tensions due to the ongoing conflict between Iran and the US, alongside increased drone activity raising security alarms.

Reports indicate that the dhow was transporting general cargo when the fire ignited. Authorities are actively investigating the cause of the blaze that led to the vessel's capsizing.

A government source provided further insights, stating, "The wooden dhow, carrying general cargo and manned by 18 Indian crew members, capsized yesterday near the Strait of Hormuz after catching fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation. A passing vessel managed to rescue the crew. Unfortunately, one Indian crew member lost his life, while four others sustained burn injuries and are currently receiving medical care in Dubai, where they are reported to be safe."

Consulate Response

Officials from the Indian Consulate met with the rescued crew members on Friday night, offering support and coordinating with the dhow's owner to assist the affected families.

Earlier that day, the Consulate General of India in Dubai expressed its sorrow over the incident via a post on social media, extending condolences for the loss of the Indian crew member. They assured that they are in contact with the ship's owner to gather more information and will provide necessary assistance promptly.

Context of the Incident

This maritime tragedy occurs amidst escalating instability in West Asia, which has raised concerns regarding the safety of commercial shipping routes in and around the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for global energy transport.

The regional conflict intensified following US-Israel strikes on Tehran on February 28, leading to the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran has targeted Israel and US military installations across Gulf nations.

These hostilities have resulted in disruptions and blockades in the Strait of Hormuz, heightening risks for commercial vessels operating in the region. There have been previous reports of threats and attacks against Indian crew members in similar contexts.
