Details of the Incident
The bus, operated by a private service named C Bird, was transporting 32 passengers from Bengaluru to Shivamogga. Karnataka's Chief Minister expressed his sorrow on social media, stating, "I am heartbroken to hear about the tragic loss of many passengers in the horrific collision between a truck and a bus near Chitradurga. It is deeply painful for families to face such a tragic end to their journey home during the Christmas holidays. A thorough investigation must be conducted to determine the cause of the accident. Reactions from Officials
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar also shared his condolences via Twitter, saying, "I am deeply shocked by the news of the accident involving a bus heading to Gokarna from Bengaluru, which resulted in multiple fatalities. I extend my sympathies to the victims' families and pray for the swift recovery of the injured. May such tragedies never occur again." According to preliminary reports, the accident, which took place around 2 AM under the jurisdiction of the Hiriyur rural police station, was attributed to the negligence of the truck driver, who allegedly fell asleep and crossed the divider, colliding with the bus, which subsequently caught fire.
Investigation Underway
Police suspect that the truck driver may have dozed off at the wheel, and investigations are ongoing. Bandaru informed reporters, "The accident occurred around 2 AM on NH-48. The truck was en route to Bengaluru when its driver fell asleep, leading to the collision with the bus. The bus immediately caught fire, and the truck also ignited, resulting in the driver's death at the scene." He added, "There were 32 individuals on the bus, including the driver and conductor. Twenty-one passengers have been rescued, and five to six individuals are receiving treatment, although their conditions are not critical."
