Bus Accident in Bhendi Bazaar, Mumbai

Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his sorrow over the tragic incident in the Bhendi Bazaar area of Mumbai, where a bus from BEST was involved in an accident that resulted in the deaths of four individuals on Monday night. He announced a financial assistance of five lakh rupees for the families of the deceased.


According to a police official, the accident led to the fatalities of four people, with nine others sustaining injuries. Among the deceased, three were women.


The injured individuals have been admitted to a nearby hospital. The bus driver has been taken into custody, and the process of filing a First Information Report (FIR) against him is underway. Sujata Utale, a public relations officer for Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), stated that the incident occurred around 10:05 PM outside the Bhendi Bazaar (West) railway station. At the time of the accident, the bus was being operated by Santosh Ramesh Sawant (52), with Bhagwan Bhau Ghare (47) serving as the conductor.


Government Response and Investigation Demands

A senior official from the municipal corporation, speaking on the condition of anonymity, informed that the accident happened while the bus was being reversed outside the railway station. Fadnavis expressed his condolences and reiterated the commitment to provide financial support to the legal heirs of the deceased.


In a post on the social media platform X, the Chief Minister described the incident as extremely unfortunate and paid heartfelt tributes to the victims. He stated, "The state government will provide five lakh rupees in financial assistance to the legal heirs of the deceased."


Meanwhile, Varsha Gaikwad, the president of the Mumbai unit of the Congress party and a Lok Sabha member, has called for an investigation into the accident. She remarked, "This is deeply tragic. Poor bus conditions, untrained drivers, and the administration's reluctance to invest in improvements at BEST are putting lives at risk daily. We demand a thorough investigation into this incident."
