Tragic Bus Accident in Iraq Claims 21 Lives: What Went Wrong?
Bus Crash in Southern Iraq
Irbil (Iraq): Authorities in Iraq are currently in the process of identifying the victims of a tragic bus accident that resulted in 21 fatalities over the weekend, as reported by a provincial official on Monday.
The incident occurred when a passenger bus crashed and ignited on Sunday in southern Iraq, marking yet another deadly event on the nation’s inadequately maintained roadways.
According to Ahmad Saleem, spokesperson for the Thi Qar provincial council, 14 of the deceased were burned beyond recognition, making identification difficult. Among the victims, there are believed to be two Iranian nationals, although their identities remain unconfirmed.
The bus was en route from Najaf, a city of significant religious importance to Shiite Muslims and a popular pilgrimage site, to Basra, a southern port city. The crash took place around 3 PM on Sunday in Thi Qar province, specifically between Thi Qar and Diwaniyah, Saleem noted.
In addition to the fatalities, 20 individuals sustained injuries, including two Iranians who were transported to Iran for medical care on Monday morning via the Iranian Consulate in Basra.
Saleem pointed to the poor condition of the road as a contributing factor to the crash, highlighting that local authorities had previously raised concerns regarding its safety. He also mentioned that a critical shortage of ambulances in the province hindered the emergency response.
Road accidents are a frequent occurrence in Iraq, where years of conflict, corruption, and lack of investment have left much of the infrastructure in disrepair. Many highways are inadequately maintained, vehicles are often outdated, and traffic laws are rarely enforced.
Earlier this year, a bus carrying pilgrims to Karbala, another significant city in Iraq, crashed north of Baghdad, resulting in 18 deaths.
