New Delhi, Sept 6: A five-story building that served as a boys' paying guest accommodation collapsed in the Satya Niketan area of South Delhi on Sunday afternoon, resulting in one fatality and leaving several individuals feared trapped beneath the debris.

Following the incident, four individuals were transported to AIIMS, where one was pronounced dead upon arrival, while two others remain in critical condition, according to hospital sources.

One rescuer who was also hospitalized has since been discharged after receiving treatment.

The structure, known as “Hostel Daze,” collapsed around 1:30 PM near the Nanakpura Gurdwara. Police reported that a PCR call was received at the South Campus police station at 1:34 PM, prompting a large-scale rescue operation.

Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Delhi Disaster Management Authority, Centralised Accident and Trauma Services, and Civil Defence were dispatched to the scene, with eight fire tenders deployed.

Authorities stated that the precise number of individuals trapped or injured is currently unknown, although some rescues have been made. Witnesses suggested that over 20 people might be trapped, a figure that officials have yet to confirm. Locals indicated that the nearly 20-year-old building contained around 15 rooms, typically shared by two to three students each.

Rajen Chhetri, a nearby resident, mentioned that construction was ongoing in the basement at the time of the collapse. He alleged that water had pooled in the basement and suggested that the building's foundation was compromised. This account has not been independently verified.

The narrow and congested streets of Satya Niketan initially obstructed rescue vehicles, while local residents assisted emergency teams in clearing debris.

Police and paramilitary forces were deployed to manage crowds and ensure ambulances could move freely.

The building was situated close to Delhi University's South Campus, an area known for its student hostels and dining options.

Students from Kerala, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh were reportedly among those residing in the accommodation.

Authorities have identified the building's owner and are working to locate him. As a precaution, the adjacent building has been evacuated.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that various agencies are collaborating to rescue those trapped and provide immediate support to affected families. Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood mentioned that the situation is being closely monitored.

NDMC Vice-Chairperson Kuljeet Singh Chahal indicated that initial reports suggest construction was underway to create a basement in the existing structure, promising strict action against those deemed responsible.

As of the time of this report, rescue and relief operations were still ongoing.
