In Maharashtra, relentless heavy rainfall led to a tragic incident on Sunday night. Around 8:30 PM on July 5, 2026, a portion of a dilapidated three-story building collapsed in the Janata Nagar area of Mankhurd, Mumbai. This disaster resulted in the loss of six lives, including five young children and one woman. Additionally, a young man was rescued from the debris in critical condition and has been admitted to a hospital.

Rescue Operations Amidst Adverse Weather

Following the incident, teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, BMC, police, and NDRF worked tirelessly throughout the night, braving the rain to conduct rescue operations. There were concerns that more individuals might be trapped under the rubble.

Heavy Rain as a Major Contributing Factor

Initial reports indicate that the building, located behind Hanuman Temple, was quite old and in a state of disrepair. The continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days weakened the structure, leading to its sudden collapse on Sunday night, trapping several individuals beneath the debris.

Casualties Confirmed at Local Hospitals

Rescue workers promptly transported the injured to nearby hospitals. At Rajawadi Hospital and Shatabdi Hospital, doctors confirmed the deaths of six individuals, comprising five children and one woman. A 24-year-old man is currently receiving treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.

Ongoing Rescue Efforts

Upon receiving news of the collapse, teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, BMC, local police, and NDRF arrived at the scene. Despite the heavy rain and darkness, rescue operations were conducted at a rapid pace. Specialized equipment was utilized to clear the debris, and the area was cordoned off for safety.

Government Announces Compensation

The Maharashtra government has announced a financial assistance of ₹4 lakh for the families of each deceased victim. The state has also committed to covering the medical expenses for the injured.

Identification of Victims Underway

Authorities, along with hospital administration, are in the process of formally identifying the deceased. Officials stated that all bodies are being documented and will be handed over to their families.

Orange Alert Issued for Mumbai

In the aftermath of the incident, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad districts for Monday, July 6.

Strong winds at speeds of 50 to 60 km/h

Risk of flooding in low-lying areas

To ensure student safety, the BMC has declared a holiday for all government and private schools and colleges in Mumbai. Mumbai University has also postponed scheduled examinations.
