Mathura: The tragic capsizing of a boat in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura district has resulted in a rising death toll, now confirmed at 10 as of Friday. Rescue operations are ongoing, with several individuals still unaccounted for.
DIG of Agra Range, Shailesh Kumar Pandey, confirmed the fatalities and stated that search efforts are actively being conducted to find those missing.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the incident, stating he is 'deeply pained' by the tragedy. He extended his condolences to the families affected and wished for the swift recovery of the injured, assuring that local authorities are providing necessary support.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described the event as 'extremely tragic and heart-wrenching,' offering his sympathies to the grieving families. He has directed relevant officials to promptly reach the scene, enhance rescue operations, and ensure adequate medical care for the injured.
He added, 'I pray to Lord Shri Ram to grant peace to the departed souls, provide strength to the bereaved families, and ensure a quick recovery for the injured.'
The incident unfolded in the Yamuna River near the famous Kesi Ghat in Mathura when a boat carrying devotees capsized on Friday afternoon.
District Magistrate CP Singh reported that the mishap occurred around 2:45 p.m. when nearly 30 individuals from Ludhiana were on two boats. One boat reportedly sank after colliding with a floating pipa bridge.
Officials noted that several individuals have been rescued alive, and search operations are still in progress, with multiple teams from the police, district administration, and divers deployed at the scene.
More than a dozen people are feared missing, and efforts are being made urgently to locate them. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and prioritizing relief and medical assistance for survivors.
