Avalanche Incident in Uttarkashi

In Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, a severe avalanche occurred in the rugged hills near Kedartal, leading to the disappearance of eight climbers. On Tuesday, rescue teams successfully recovered the bodies of two of the missing climbers. However, the identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed. Meanwhile, efforts to locate the remaining six climbers who went missing after the incident are ongoing.

It is noteworthy that on October 29, a significant avalanche struck the challenging trekking route at Kedartal's high altitude, causing all members of an eight-person mountaineering team to lose contact.

Shardul Gusain, the district disaster management officer of Uttarkashi, reported that a joint team from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) discovered the two bodies during their search operation near Kedarkharak. The rescue team communicated this information to the administration via satellite phone.

The recovered bodies include one male and one female. However, details regarding their identities are still pending.

According to Gusain, the search operation continued until around 3 PM on Tuesday. Afterward, the rescue team returned to their base camp at Kedarkharak. The search for the missing individuals is set to resume on Wednesday. To enhance the efficiency of the rescue efforts, an alternative helipad has been established near the incident site to facilitate quick access for rescue teams if needed.

Officials indicated that the joint rescue team also found several tents and bags filled with equipment near Kedarkharak, which is the second major stop along this trekking route, situated at an elevation of approximately 4,000 meters above sea level. Previously, on Monday, a team of ten members from SDRF and NIM was airlifted to Kedarkharak via helicopter.

The group of eight missing climbers included five male climbers from West Bengal, two female climbers from Uttar Pradesh, and one local guide from Uttarkashi. They had embarked on a journey to Kedartal. On October 29, while descending from the glacier to Kedartal Lake, a sudden and heavy avalanche struck near Kedarkharak, affecting the entire area and severing contact with the eight climbers.

Kedartal Lake is located at an altitude of approximately 15,485 feet (4,720 meters) above sea level. This lake is fed by the melting snow from the Thalay Sagar, Bhirgupanth, and Jogin mountain peaks. Due to its natural beauty and challenging mountainous conditions, this location is quite popular among experienced climbers and trekkers. However, the route to reach here is considered extremely challenging, with weather and geographical conditions posing constant risks.

The Kedartal trek, which begins from Gangotri, spans about 18 kilometers. Along this route, climbers must navigate steep ascents along the banks of the Kedarganga River. During the journey, climbers encounter dense birch forests, lush green meadows at high altitudes, and unstable moraine areas. The paths in these regions are often sensitive due to snow, rocks, and loose soil, making them hazardous. Sudden weather changes or avalanches can pose serious threats to climbers.

Reports indicate that a total of 12 individuals were involved in this expedition, including seven climbers and five support staff. This team had set off from Gangotri on October 27 and was scheduled to complete their trek by October 29. However, the avalanche during this period turned the expedition into a tragic incident. After the event, contact was lost with eight climbers, while four support staff managed to return safely to Gangotri.

It was reported that on October 30, the four support staff successfully navigated their way back to Gangotri after the avalanche. During this time, they informed about the loss of contact with the remaining eight members, prompting the administration to be alerted about the incident. Shardul Gusain stated that once information was received from the trekking organization Sol Seeker, rescue teams were immediately mobilized. Subsequently, a search operation was initiated to locate the missing individuals.

Meanwhile, Arpan Yaduvanshi, the commander of SDRF, mentioned that adverse weather conditions in the area have been causing persistent challenges in conducting search and rescue operations. The weather in the high-altitude rugged mountainous region has been changing frequently, affecting the mobility of rescue teams and their search efforts. Despite these challenges, teams remain dedicated to locating the six missing individuals. Following the recovery of two bodies on Tuesday, the rescue operation will proceed with heightened vigilance.
