Imphal, Sept 13: A tragic incident occurred early Sunday in Tollen village, located in the Tamenglong district, where a woman lost her life and two others were injured due to an attack by unidentified armed individuals.
The assault happened around 4 AM on National Highway-37 (NH-37). The victim, Nu Lhingzangai, died at the scene, while her husband, Seineh, and their youngest son suffered serious injuries.
Members of the Assam Rifles stationed at Kaimai promptly responded to the situation, transporting the injured father and son to Jiribam for urgent medical care.
Details regarding the attackers and the motives behind the assault remain unclear, and updates on the condition of the injured individuals are awaited.
Community Response
This incident coincided with a day marked as Black Day by the Kuki community, a time to remember the lives lost and the suffering experienced during violent events in the 1990s.
The Kuki Youth Organisation (KYO) Women’s Council expressed their outrage over the killing, demanding an immediate and thorough investigation into the matter. They stated, “The reported incident is particularly painful as it comes on a day observed by the Kuki community as Black Day. A family has been left to bear profound pain and loss.”
The council insisted that those responsible should be identified and held accountable based on credible evidence and due process. They emphasized that “women and children must never become targets of violence. Families deserve to live without fear, and victims deserve justice.”
Local Authority's Condemnation
The Kaimai Naga Village Authority also condemned the attack, labeling the assailants as an “unidentified group” and expressing concern that such acts could foster suspicion and division among local communities.
In a brief condemnation letter, the authority remarked, “This act appears to be a deliberate and malicious attempt to create disharmony, suspicion, and division between the different communities that have long lived together peacefully in this region.”
They called for a comprehensive and impartial investigation and urged both communities to maintain restraint, appealing to community leaders and civil society organizations to promote peace and understanding.
Concerns for Civilian Safety
This attack has heightened concerns regarding the safety of civilians residing along the NH-37 corridor, which has been sensitive due to the ongoing conflict in Manipur.
Tollen, also referred to as Tolen, is a small village in the Tamenglong West (Tousem) Sub-Division, with a population of 262 people across 54 households, according to the 2011 Census. The village is strategically located along NH-37, a vital road connecting Imphal with Jiribam, and is in proximity to other settlements such as Kaimai and Oinamlong.
