Tragic Attack in Nigeria: Eight Lives Lost After Funeral Shooting

A recent shooting in Benue state, Nigeria, has left eight people dead and five injured after gunmen targeted mourners following a funeral. The attack, which occurred early Sunday, has raised concerns about ongoing violence in the region, prompting protests from local youth demanding government action. Amnesty International reported higher casualty figures and criticized the government's failure to protect its citizens. The incident highlights the ongoing conflicts between herders and farmers in this key agricultural area, where violence has become increasingly common.

Fatal Shooting in Benue State

In a tragic incident in north-central Nigeria, gunmen opened fire on mourners following a funeral, resulting in the deaths of eight individuals, as reported by local police on Monday.

The shooting took place early Sunday morning in the Otukpo-Nobi area of Benue state, with five additional people sustaining injuries, according to police spokesperson Udeme Edet.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear. Benue, known for its agricultural output, has seen frequent conflicts between herders and farmers over land and resources. Last year, violence in the Yelwata community claimed 150 lives.

Edet noted that several thatched homes and a motorcycle were set on fire during the assault, prompting an increase in police presence in the region.

Amnesty International Nigeria reported that at least ten fatalities occurred, while local police often provide lower casualty estimates.

The organization highlighted that youth protests following the attack indicate a growing frustration among residents, who are demanding an end to the violence and kidnappings that have plagued many areas of Benue state.

The rights group emphasized that the government must fulfill its primary responsibility to safeguard the lives and property of its citizens.
