Nalbari, June 2: Following the horrific attack in Assam's Nalbari district that resulted in the death of 18-year-old Madhurjya Barman, a member of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU), and left his cousin sister in critical condition, local political and student leaders paid a visit to the grieving family on Tuesday.

Nalbari MLA Jayanta Mallabaruah, accompanied by AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya, expressed their condolences and promised support to the family as the community grapples with the shocking event.

Before meeting the family, Mallabaruah informed the media that the government is dedicated to ensuring justice and is investigating the possibility of additional suspects being involved in the incident.

"The individual responsible for the crime has been killed in a police encounter, but inquiries are ongoing to determine if others were involved. The government has directed the police to implement the strictest measures possible," he stated.

Bhattacharya referred to Madhurjya's death as a personal loss for the student organization, emphasizing that the young man died while attempting to protect his cousin sister during the assault.

"Losing an AASU member feels like losing a family member. Madhurjya sacrificed himself to save his sister. We met with his parents today, and their grief is unimaginable," he remarked.

Bhattacharya highlighted that Madhurjya was the only child of his parents and had recently completed his Higher Secondary examination, urging the state government to provide all necessary assistance to the family.

In her sorrow, Madhurjya's mother called on the government to prevent other families from experiencing similar tragedies.

"My son was just 18. He was passionate about serving the community and was actively involved with AASU. I hope no other child has to endure such a brutal attack," she expressed.

Meanwhile, Nalbari Senior Superintendent of Police Bibekananda Das reported that the investigation is ongoing and that the weapon used in the attack has been recovered.

"The nature of the attack was barbaric. The accused also assaulted the police team during the operation, damaging service vehicles and injuring a sub-inspector. The victim girl is still fighting for her life, and we urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals," Das stated.

Security measures have been heightened in the area, with police stationed outside the accused's home to prevent any disturbances.

In a notable decision, representatives from five villages in the Kalakuchi area agreed not to allow public funeral services for the accused.

A meeting organized by the Kalakuchi Kumarikata Milan Kabarsthan condemned the crime and resolved that the accused would not be buried in the traditional public cemetery.

Residents mentioned that the family could conduct burial rites on private property if they chose to do so.

In the midst of this tense situation, doctors at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) provided some hope regarding the condition of the injured girl.

GMCH Superintendent Dr. Devajit Choudhury reported that she has shown signs of improvement, being able to speak and recognize her father, although she remains under close medical supervision.

Doctors cautioned that she is not yet completely out of danger, and recovery from the psychological trauma of the attack may take time. Further MRI and ultrasound tests are planned to evaluate injuries to her lower body and spine.

This attack has sparked widespread outrage throughout Assam, with calls for immediate justice and stronger protections against such violent acts.
