Tragic Assault Linked to Theft Incident in Sonapur Leads to Arrests

Incident Overview


Jorabat, Dec 29: A theft-related incident in Hatimura, Sonapur, turned fatal when a man, allegedly attacked by resort staff, died from his injuries. This prompted law enforcement to detain seven individuals linked to the case.


Authorities were alerted on Saturday about a suspected thief being held and assaulted by locals in Hatimura. A police unit quickly arrived at the scene, took the injured individual into custody, and transported him to Sonapur District Hospital. Due to his deteriorating condition, he was later referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Bhangagarh, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.


The victim has been identified as 35-year-old Farjul Alom, a resident of Barghat under the jurisdiction of Tezpur Police Station in Sonitpur district.


Initial investigations indicated that Farjul Alom was reportedly attacked by employees of Mairas Resort in Sonapur.


In connection with this incident, police have arrested seven suspects and brought them to Sonapur Police Station for further interrogation.


The arrested individuals include: Mustafizur Hoque (18) from Pub Bobosola, Darrang; Chitra Das (28) from Bordoloini, Mayong; Ram Sunar (32) from Namdung Koilori, Margherita; Sushil Nath (28) from Hatighuli, Sivasagar; Satyajit Haloi (26) from Sathikuchi, Tihu; Ranjit Brahma (35) from North Gadhuligaon, Baksa; and Manab Roy (25) from Mayong, Morigaon.


A case has been filed at Sonapur Police Station (Case No. 216/2025) under Sections 117(4) and 103(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.


Authorities stated that the investigation is ongoing to clarify the circumstances surrounding the death and to determine individual accountability.
