Tragic Ammonia Gas Leak in Tamil Nadu Claims Five Lives: What Happened?
Overview of the Incident
Chennai: The ammonia gas leak incident in Tiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu, has tragically resulted in five fatalities. State Labour Welfare Minister J Mohamed Farvas announced on Monday that arrangements are being made to return the deceased workers to their hometown.
Health officials reported that two women died on June 21, followed by three more migrant workers who passed away on Monday morning, raising the death toll to five.
In response to the incident, which sparked heated discussions in the Assembly, Minister Farvas stated that Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has formed a joint team of health and pollution control board officials to prepare a preliminary report within 24 hours and a detailed report within three days.
The Chief Minister has also declared a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for each victim's family and expressed his condolences to those affected.
Farvas assured that strict action would be taken against anyone found responsible for the safety violations, emphasizing that accountability would be enforced based on the findings of the high-level inquiry committee. Legal repercussions await those responsible for the lapses.
Additionally, CM Vijay has ordered that financial aid through the Employees' State Insurance (ESI) scheme and government relief funds be expedited for the affected families.
The minister detailed that the ammonia leak occurred unexpectedly in a pipeline, affecting 74 workers, predominantly women, who required hospitalization for treatment.
"Regrettably, five women lost their lives in this incident. The Chief Minister has expressed his condolences and announced compensation from the CM Public Relief Fund. The government will also facilitate the transportation of the deceased back to their home state at no cost," Farvas stated.
Measures will be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Tamil Nadu has a total of 54,957 industries employing approximately 27.65 lakh workers, with 6,609 of them working in hazardous environments.
During the minister's address, interruptions from the opposition led to a tense atmosphere, with Speaker JCD Prabhakar urging members to maintain order.
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami insisted on discussing a separate issue, leading to a confrontation with the Speaker, who had previously warned members about their conduct during the live proceedings.
After failing to address their concerns regarding a resolution on the Mekedatu dam, AIADMK members staged a walkout.
The ammonia leak occurred at a seafood processing facility in the Kannigaipair Manjangaranai area near Periyapalayam on June 21. The incident took place during routine operations, exposing workers to the hazardous chemical.
Emergency response teams, along with district officials, police, fire services, and public health authorities, were quickly deployed to manage the situation and provide medical assistance.
Affected individuals exhibited symptoms typical of ammonia exposure, such as breathlessness, eye irritation, coughing, and varying levels of respiratory distress, according to a health department bulletin.
The precise cause of the incident is still under investigation. A total of 74 individuals were affected, with 67 currently receiving treatment and two discharged. The initial two fatalities were reported on June 21, followed by three more by June 22.
