Tragic Accident Claims Life of Dancer During Bihu Festivities in Assam

A tragic accident during the Bihu festival in Assam has resulted in the death of a 25-year-old dancer, Nishamani Haloi, and left several others injured. The incident occurred when a vehicle carrying a Bihu troupe collided with a speeding trailer. Reports indicate that at least 11 individuals sustained serious injuries, with five in critical condition. The troupe was en route to a performance when the collision happened, casting a shadow over the festive celebrations. Members of another troupe rushed to the scene upon hearing the news. This unfortunate event highlights the dangers faced by performers during festive travels.

Nalbari, April 25: A tragic incident marred the festive spirit of Bihu as a 25-year-old dancer lost her life and several others were injured when a vehicle transporting a Bihu troupe collided head-on with a speeding trailer in Assam's Tamulpur district late Friday night.

The victim has been identified as Nishamani Haloi, a dancer from the 'Bhaskarjyoti Bihu Husori Dal' based in Haribhanga, Nalbari.

She was a resident of Nij Jhargaon in Tamulpur and reportedly died instantly due to the impact.

Reports indicate that the accident took place at Noakhat on the Tamulpur–Nagrijuli road when the traveller vehicle (AS-25-DC-5893), carrying approximately 30 troupe members, collided with a trailer (PB 03 AP 6681) traveling in the opposite direction. The troupe was on its way to Bangalipara for a Bihu performance.

At least 11 individuals suffered serious injuries in the crash.

The injured include Arun Medhi, Bidyut Das, Jagat Ray, driver Pankaj Baishya, Ankita Das, Ratan Kalita, Nitu Baruah, Shivani Baruah, Kabyashree Saruwa, and Dibakar Moran, among others.

Five of the injured are reported to be in critical condition and have been transferred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for specialized care.

A troupe member who was in the vehicle recounted the terrifying experience, stating, “We were en route to a competition in Bangalipara when a truck collided with us head-on. About 30 of us were traveling together. Many have been taken to hospitals, but I cannot confirm the exact number.”

Meanwhile, members of another troupe, Sonali Asom Nalbari Husori Dal, who had already arrived in Bangalipara for their performance, hurried to the accident scene upon hearing the news.

“One performer has lost her life, and four others are in critical condition and have been sent for advanced treatment. Approximately 15 individuals have been injured,” a troupe member stated, noting that the Bhaskarjyoti Bihu Husori Dal was running late for their scheduled performance when the incident occurred.
