Tragic Accident at Star Cement Factory Claims Engineer's Life
Industrial Mishap at Star Cement
Jorabat, Jul 3: A tragic industrial incident at the Star Cement facility located in Samata, Sonapur, has resulted in the death of a young engineer and left several others with serious injuries, raising urgent questions about the safety measures in place at the site.
The accident took place early on Wednesday morning in the coal crusher area of the factory's original operational unit. Reports indicate that Shiva Tiwari, a 25-year-old engineer hailing from Madhya Pradesh, was on duty when he fell into the crusher machine. This malfunction caused a surge of extremely hot coal particles to erupt, inflicting fatal injuries on Tiwari.
In addition to Tiwari, three other workers—Prasanna Medhi (38), Satya Sarkar, and Ranjit Bordoloi (30)—sustained significant injuries during the incident. While some unofficial reports suggest that as many as five workers may have been hurt, this information has not been officially verified.
Following the accident, panic erupted at the plant. The injured were quickly transported to Sonapur District Hospital, but Tiwari unfortunately passed away shortly after his arrival. District officials were present at the hospital, and his body was subsequently sent to Guwahati for a post-mortem examination.
The three injured workers were transferred to a private hospital in Guwahati for specialized treatment. Among them, Prasanna Medhi is reported to be in critical condition and has been placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Despite the gravity of the situation, Star Cement's management has remained notably silent, prompting public anger and speculation about a possible cover-up. There are claims that essential safety gear was lacking, and that the accident might have been avoided with more stringent safety protocols.
Local community members and worker advocacy groups are calling for an impartial and comprehensive investigation into the incident's causes and for the company to be held accountable. In the meantime, Sonapur Police have initiated their own inquiry into this unfortunate event.
