Building Collapse in Southwest Delhi Claims Lives

New Delhi: The tragic building collapse in the Satya Niketan area of southwest Delhi has resulted in seven fatalities as rescue efforts continue into their second day.

Rescue teams have successfully saved 12 individuals from the wreckage of the decades-old structure.

Inspector General Narendra Bundela from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) stated that they currently lack a precise count of those still trapped beneath the debris.

Bundela indicated that the ongoing rescue operations, involving the NDRF and other agencies from the Delhi government, are anticipated to extend into late Monday.

Earlier today, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) reported that 11 patients were admitted to the JPN Apex Trauma Centre following the incident.

"Among the 11 patients, five were declared dead upon arrival, and one critically injured patient later succumbed to their injuries. Three others are currently receiving treatment, with one having undergone limb surgery. Another patient sustained minor injuries and was discharged after observation," the statement detailed.

The building, which served as a boys' paying guest accommodation near the South Campus of Delhi University, collapsed around 1:30 PM on Sunday during ongoing repair work.

Rescue operations have been conducted throughout the night by various agencies, including the Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service, NDRF, and the Delhi Disaster Management Authority.

Authorities have initiated legal action against the building's owner and others involved, and a magisterial inquiry has been ordered.
