Jorabat, Sept 13: The Kolong River was filled with excitement as eight traditional boats competed in a nearly 3 km race at Maloibari in Dimoria on Saturday, attracting a large crowd along the banks.

This state-level traditional boat race was organized by the Maloibari Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva Namghar to commemorate the death anniversary of Srimanta Sankardeva.

Participants included teams from Darrang, Mangaldai, Mayong, Morigaon, Jhargaon, and various other regions of Assam.

The event also celebrated the diamond jubilee of the namghar, with boats navigating the challenging waters of the Kolong in a fierce competition.

The atmosphere was vibrant, filled with the rhythmic paddling of oars, the sounds of dhol and taal, and the cheers from enthusiastic spectators.

The boat crewed by Tusta Mohan Biswas from Morigaon claimed the championship title, while another team from Morigaon, led by Pradip Mondal, secured the runner-up position.

The champions received a cash prize of Rs 30,000 along with a trophy, while the runners-up were awarded Rs 20,000 and a trophy.

All participating teams were also rewarded with cash incentives to promote ongoing involvement in this traditional sport.

Dimoria MLA Dr. Tapan Das and renowned bodybuilder Mahadev Deka were present as special guests at the event.

The organizers emphasized that the event aimed to revive a traditional indigenous water sport that is gradually fading and to engage the younger generation with Assam’s cultural heritage and traditional games.

This boat race not only added a sporting element to the religious and cultural observance but also highlighted a sport deeply rooted in Assam’s riverine lifestyle, making it a focal point of community celebration.

The large turnout along the riverbanks showcased the enduring popularity of traditional boat racing and its significance in Assam’s cultural and sporting legacy.
